Painting Basics
Dates:
Friday - Wednesday, September 28th -
October 5th, 2012, Check-in: Friday afternoon the
28th, 3:30PM - 5:30PM.
Place: Children's Harbor on Lake Martin
Workshops: 3
Instructors:
Tom Black and Jean Chambers will conduct studio classes,
participants working independently with one on one time with instructor.
Class Size:
20 - 25 artists each
Cost: $575 (workshop) includes
meals & lodging
on-site at Children's Harbor Friday night through Tuesday night.
$500 for the Independent Workshop,
includes meals and lodging.
Attending Family Member (non-Artist):
Friend or spouse may attend for $300
(lodging and food included in this price)
Included:
art instruction, breakfast, lunch, evening socials.

Note: No
class changes or refunds of deposit after September 15th, 2012.
Lodging:
- Lodging will be in the new Harbor Lodge cabins. Linens & towels will be provided. You may want to bring an extra blanket. All beds are twin beds.
- Each cabin has four rooms, bedroom(4) + bathroom(1)
- Each room has 2 twin bed + a bunk bed and private bath
- There are 12 cabins with 48 individual rooms
- A fee of 40.00 will reserve a private room
- On a first come first serve basis, you may reserve a cabin(4 rooms) as
- Some artists may want to group together in a singe cabin (4 rooms)... requests will be taken on a first come first serve basis.
- If you do NOT indicated a roommate choice or included a private room fee, a roommate will be assigned to you.
Scholarships for The Sarah Towery Art Colony 2012 - Tentative
One (or more) full scholarships -- The Towery Family Scholarship and the Educator's Scholarship
One (or more) partial scholarships -- The partial scholarship will be approximately 1/2 price --- attendees pay $250 for lodging & meals.
All scholarship recipients will lodge on campus. The scholarships should be applied for through the Internet or by mail & include: an artist's statement, a resume of experience with pictures of recent work?, why you want financial assistance & why you want to attend the Art Colony retreat.
To qualify for the Educator's Scholarship you must be currently teaching art at any level (kindergarten through college) in the state of Alabama. The partial scholarships will be open to anyone including former instructors and can be nominated by the board - not just applied for by the public. Please email alartcolony@gmail.com to be considered for a scholarship.

Art Colony Tidbits
- Dress is extremely casual
- Breakfast begins at 7:30a.m., the studios open at 9:00a.m., Lunch is 12:00 - 2:00p.m., studios close at 5:00p.m. and evening socials at 6:30p.m. All meals and socials will be held at the Harbor Lodge Conference Center (Dining Area).
- Painting Classes will be held in Harbor Lodge Conference Center and Mariner's Hall on the Children's Harbor Campus. Don't forget your dropcloths!"
- Artists will need to bring an easel, dropcloth and any art supplies they normally use.
- Private Rooms will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis for an additional charge of $40.00. All other artists will be asked to share a room.
- All participants will receive a complimentary Art Colony apron.
- Workshops are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. A $100 deposit is required, the balance due at check-in. Deadline for registration is September 15, 2012.

- All those folks who serve your meals and arrange the social hours are volunteers. Please give them a big "Thanks"!
- Visitors: We do not encourage visitors during Art Colony studio hours. However, we welcome your guests and/or spouses to the evening socials.
- This year's judge: On Sunday night the instructors will select two paintings that the Art Colony will purchase for its permanent collection. Artists may enter up to 3 pieces for consideration. Please bring up to three pieces of art from home for judging.
- Please note that some previous art experience is required.

EVENING SOCIALS
Saturday: 6:30 PM

Monday: 6:30 PM
Tuesday: 5:00 - 7:00 Art Exhibit with Awards Announcements and Reception.
The public is invited and may tour the studios. Invite friends and family!
Wednesday - Usual schedule for breakfast, morning studios and lunch. Wrap up and say goodbye at 4PM.
Necessary Gear
- ART Materials including easel
- Drop Cloth
- Bed Linens and towels
- Toiletries
- Artists will need to bring an Easel, Drop Cloth and art supplies...
Additional Checklist
- A light for your Easel if you have it
- Up to three pieces of art (framed or unframed) to be judged for the permanent collection
- BYBO - Soda and water will be available in the conference kitchen
- Casual Attire: (most people stay in paint clothes but some like to change before the socials)
- Note: weather may be hot, cold, rainy, we never know in the south!
